(PSD; a psycho-social service)

Dear children and teens, dear parents,

When a child or teen has to undergo a stem cell transplant, his or her entire family will also be exposed to great stress for a while: They are worried about the high-dose therapy accompanied by the respective side effects, but there are also fears in regards to the isolation taking place in a single room over the course of several weeks, which is often far away from home. This treatment is the source of significant changes, which will transform a family’s normal everyday life.

Families affected by this event therefore benefit from medical and social-judicial information, comforting talks, and contact with other families, as well as from distraction and relaxation. Our PsychoSozialerDienst (PSD) has a broad range of offers facilitating the management of those aspects.

Our team consists of people from various professional backgrounds that you can fall back on: A psychological psychotherapist, a psychologist, a senior physician and psycho-oncologist, a family therapist, a social worker, a music therapist and children and youth psychotherapist, as well as teachers and educators.

As soon as a decision regarding your child’s transplant on our premises has been reached, you will be able to contact a set POC, who will discuss and clarify your needs, and who, if necessary, also includes Ms. Arnold, a psychologist, and Mr. Siegler, a senior physician and psycho-oncologist. We are there for you if you want to discuss possible problems when dealing with and handling your child’s disease, but of course you can also discuss your own fears and worries as well as sibling’s problems. We also offer help and counseling in regards to social law issues.

Our educator Cécile Clément offers diverse and age-appropriate games and activities. If desired, she will also provide information in regards to how to assist your child in dealing with this extraordinary situation.

Ms. Hohmann-Huet, our teacher from the Heinrich-Hoffmann-Schule (Schule für Kranke), a school for sick children and youths located in the city of Frankfurt/Main, teaches the main subjects, as far as the children’s state of health allows.

Our two sports scientists, Anna Senn-Malaschonak and Susan Wallek concentrate on the incorporation of sports therapy in stem cell transplants. Against this background, we offer some of our patients an individual, creative physical training, which can have a positive effect on body and soul.

On Fridays, starting at 4 PM, parents can attend the Elterncafé (parent’s cafe) in the Elternküche (parent’s kitchen), a recurring event hosted by Protestant pastor Knecht and Catholic pastor Schorberger. If desired, they will also come to your child’s ward to talk, and for communion/anointing of the sick.

With the approach “Laughing cures”, the clown doctors allow for a light-hearted atmosphere; at least for a few moments, they relieve some of the fear and tension building up.
